Referee Coaching
My name Rob Walters and I serve as the state director of assessment. That means I lead our team of referee coaches and mentors, coordinate mentoring and assessment state-wide, and help referees grow and move up on their journey.
Do you have what it takes to become a mentor? If so, reach out. Are you a referee at any level from beginning to advanced that wants to improve? If so, reach out!
As we approach the 2024 season, course material for recertification and for first-time referee instructors will become available here. In addition, we will provide information on mentoring and assessment for 2024.
Mentor Relicensing Process
WHO CAN RE-LICENSE:
AS A MENTOR: If you were a licensed mentor, regional assessor, or regional instructor in 2023, you may relicense here as a mentor. Opportunities in Idaho to upgrade to referee coach will be provided in June, but you must be a mentor first. Remember, you may not teach, mentor, or be involved in any instructional session after December 31 until you are relicensed.
AS A RETURNING REFEREE COACH: Any existing referee coach moving into Idaho may also relicense here. Just choose the returing referee coach option.
COURSEWORK: For 2024, two steps are required for you to relicense.
First, you'll need to complete the online work in the Learning Center. This includes the standard work of a background check, safe and healthy playing environments, and other work assigned by US Soccer. In addition, it requires you to upload three videos:
1) Leading a video debrief
2) Leading a field session
3) Leading a post-game debrief as mentor
Second, after the online work, you'll need to attend a mandatory zoom session for all mentors/coaches statewide. We will provide 3 date options and it will last about 30 minutes.
Both the learning center work and the zoom session are required before you will be relicensed for 2024.
BACKGROUND CHECK UPDATES: If your background has expired or will expire soon, you'll complete it at this time (for those 18 and over). This requires an additional $30 fee but is valid for 2 years. If you have lived outside the country in the last 10 years, an additional international background check is required which costs $150.
After you have paid your fee, completed all the online training, and completed your zoom session, you will receive an email with your license. If you miss any step above, your license will be delayed until you complete that step. Your license is valid for a calendar year (January-December), then you must relicense each year.
