Returning Referee Process
If you are a referee looking to relicense for next year, you've come to the right place. Referee licenses expire on December 31 each year, at which point you need to complete the relicensing course. Read this page first, then if you have further questions, contact the district referee administrator in your area. Read the process closely here and get started! We are excited to see continue the referee journey into next year. Referee (former Grassroots) Relicensing Process & Local Classes Available
WHO CAN RE-LICENSE: If you were not licensed with US Soccer in the last 3 years, you begin as a first time referee here. If you WERE registered as a referee with US Soccer in 2021, 2022, or 2023, follow the directions below.
COURSEWORK: Your course involves online work prior to attending an in-person session. First, you register and complete the advanced work in the Learning Center. It takes about 2 hours and must be complete at least 72 hours before you attend an in person session. See dates and times listed at the right. In person training is divided by experience level. You must attend an in person session that matches your experience level. All instructors are certified US Soccer Mentors or Referee Coaches.
BACKGROUND CHECK UPDATES: If your background has expired or will expire soon, you'll complete it at this time (for those 18 and over). This requires an additional $30 fee but is valid for 2 years. If you have lived outside the country in the last 10 years, an additional international background check is required which costs $150.
After you have paid your fee, completed all the online training, and completed your in person training, you will receive an email with your license. If you miss any step above, your license will be delayed until you complete that step. Your license is valid for a calendar year (January-December), then you must relicense each year.
